More than $16,000 awarded to school district clubs and athletic teams to purchase items they otherwise couldn’t afford
It was the end of the school day and a woman started roaming the hallways, passing out thousands of dollars to the students who remained at Elkhart Central High School.
Ashley Boling-Molyneaux, executive director of the Elkhart Education Foundation, presented a $5,000 check to the cast of “Shrek” and then a $1,393 check to the girls and boys track teams. Although school staff members had applied for that money through grants from the foundation, it took the students totally by surprise.
“I had no idea,” said Lincoln Bowers, who is playing the lead in the upcoming musical production, with a wide grin on his face. “It’s mind-blowing. It’s cool.”
The money was just a small chunk of what the Elkhart Education Foundation awarded in its most recent cycle of extracurricular grants. More than $16,000 was given to clubs and athletic teams to purchase items that would normally cost too much for their budgets.
